It's July, which means it's raspberry season in my new part of the world: Whatcom County, Washington, the largest producer of raspberries in the United States of America. The political scene has gotten so bad in this country, and I've been so mortified by it - it's cringe-inducing, really - but the other day my husband and I went out to Boxx Berry Farm and picked 22 pounds of raspberries. I made 21 pints of jam and gave about 5 pounds of fresh raspberries to my mom and my sister. Gave some pints of jam to my brother and my new neighbors. Oh, Whatcom County, I love you!! 60 % of all the nation's raspberries - now there is something I feel I can brag about! Raspberries, raspberries, glorious raspberries. Raspberry jam on toast - heaven! Raspberries, my favorite berry. But next come the blueberries, which are also quite nice. Here is a little teeny poem in celebration.
July
It's July
and I
made jam
jam jam
jam jam
and I am
so very
berry happy.
Silly poem, but you know, I'm feeling silly. Maybe sunshine is doing it to me. August is coming. Blueberries, then corn after that.
Here is an even teenier poem:
Yummers.
I love summers!
Hope you are all feeling good, filled up with pretty sunsets. Linda is hosting this week's Poetry Friday over at A Word Edgewise. Head over there to see if anyone else is feeling as silly as I am.
Oh WOW I need to hop on down to Washington and partake in some of that berry bliss!
ReplyDeleteCome!
DeleteDelightful! You brought me wonderful memories of raspberry picking. Though, when I was a kid, it was a chore. My mom had 5 lb. peanut butter pails for us to fill! There is nothing sweeter than some homemade love from a friend or neighbor. Perhaps the sun has made you silly...or the briars in the berry patch. Whatever it is, my mood lightens reading your sillies. The news used to just depress me. Now it also disgusts me. So, raspberry smiles are welcome!
ReplyDeleteI always felt picking strawberries was a chore. But picking raspberries was so much easier - not as much stooping! And oh, Linda, isn't the political news just too mortifying? Yikes.
DeleteBeautiful raspberry fun! Those jars of jam are gorgeous. Just looking at them makes me berry happy. Thanks for your fun poems.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting The Drift Record, Ramona!
DeleteThe jam picture is quite enticing, and being in the raspberry capital (my words) must feel like your own personal welcome. "Berry" nice silly poems!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. Glad to see you here.
DeleteYour jamjamjamjamjam poem makes me very happy too! Such a moment of joy! I'm jealous of you, getting to live among all of those raspberries. They are one of my favorites but I don't know of anywhere in Colorado where they grow like this and you can pick them. They are super expensive in the grocery store!
ReplyDeleteThey can get a bit expensive here, too, Carol - but U-Pick is affordable and fun!
DeleteYummy! We don't have raspberries, but the brambles are dripping with blackberries this summer. We've made jam and cobbler and just eaten them by the fistful!
ReplyDeleteWe're still waiting on our blackberries, Kay. Soon!
DeleteWow, what a wonderful image!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ruth!
DeleteI'll think of you now whenever I splurge on raspberries!
ReplyDeleteCorn and peaches are ripe in Ohio.
Oh, lucky, lucky, having peaches around already. We have to get our peaches over from Eastern Washington if we want them to be as good as a peach can be.
DeleteLoved your jam jam...now I'm ready for the corny poem!
ReplyDeleteOne corn poem, coming up....
DeleteI love your silly poem. We need silly in the world right now.
ReplyDeleteTrue, Jone, we do!
DeleteI love your being "berry happy," but your
ReplyDelete"Yummers.
I love summers!"
wins the summer berry prize!
Quite an impressive array of berry jam in your pic too! Raspberries and blueberries YUM! Thanks Julie.
Thanks, Michelle!
