Poetry Stretch - Blackbirds, Summer Hums

The Poetry Stretch this week was to fashion a verse that could be one of Thirteen Ways of Looking at Summer. With school about to start up, I feel summer slipping away, so here's my contribution:

Some Ums

Do you hear that hum?
Is it the bees' bumbled ums
as summer leaves us? Hmm?
Or is it the leaves tumbling,
is it the ums of autumn coming?

  1. Ooooh! Love the mmms of autumn!

I personally also like the "iced coffees of summer" but that's not nearly as evocative as your poem.....

  2. The older I get, the faster summer goes by. And I love fall.

  3. The hums we hear are the cicadas and toads. Love that in August. 13 Ways is one of my favorite poems. It reminds me of haiku, of course. :) I can't wait to see our whole thing put together by Trisha.

  4. Julie, I just came inside from the garden, where the bees had their noses in the mint blossoms.

Thanks for the lovely words, and for one of the most gorgeous blogs around. Where do you get the wonderful photos? Are they yours?
